Painless IUD insertion

A love letter to people with a uterus.
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a great option - not only to prevent pregnancy, but also to treat heavy menstrual bleeding, severe cramping, endometriosis and more. Many patients are hesitant to choose an IUD because of pain during placement.

The algorithm effect is real.
The internet has a way of amplifying bad incidents. You read about difficult or painful experiences and then your feed is flooded with similar stories. Before you know it, you have entered the proverbial rabbit hole of Reddit, Instagram, and other social media with people needing to vent. This does not invalidate their experiences, they are real, but it does not mean that will be your experience. Everything has risks and benefits and yours are unique to you.

Why choose an IUD anyway?
This is not hyperbole - an IUD can be life changing and life saving. They are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and are safe. If you have heavy bleeding (IYKYK), it prevents anemia, ruined clothes, and missed days of work. Painful periods can be more manageable or disappear altogether. “Set it, and forget it.” You don’t have to worry about missing a dose (like the pill) or using incorrectly (like a condom).

IUD care without the scare
There was a wild myth that the cervix did not feel pain - “it only has a few nerves”. Of course, one only needed to ask–and more importantly–believe people with cervixes to know that is not true. Pain should not be a barrier to receiving the care that’s right for you. That’s why we offer options to make the experience more comfortable. Our patients can choose to have IUD placement with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). Nitrous is safe, works quickly, and wears off rapidly—so you can typically drive yourself home afterward.
The care you need shouldn’t come with fear. Your body, your choice.
